A Study on Development of Social Health Assessment Tool and Health Status of Korean Elderly

Abstract
This study was attempted to organize a comprehensive and objective instrument measuring the health status of the elderly in social aspect. And then we identified the social health status of Korean elderly with the instrument. Data collection was done from 18, July to August, 1990. Subjects were 412 elderly in Korea. Sampling method used was convenience sampling after their place of residence is stratified into large, medium and small city, and rural area. Those who participate in the house for elderly located in Suhdaemun-gu, Mapo-gu, Kangnam-gu of Seoul were interviewed as those who reside in large city by researchers. The community elderlies of Chungju, Jeanju, Chuncheon, Jeonju involved in medium-small city was interviewed by professors of nursing colleges. Rural elderlies were interviewed by the community health practitioners who are working in a community health clinic respectively located in Kyungsangbuk-do, Kyungsangnam-do, Jeonlabuk-do, Jeonlanam-do, Kyungki-do. The tool used in this study was structured questionnaire which was organized based on previous literature review and Kim¡¯s social activity scale. And then we verified reliability and validity of the assessment tool. Data analysis included : percentage, average, SD, t-test and ANOVA. The result of the analysis follows : 1. The tool measuring the social status of elderly which was organized in this study revealed relatively high reliability with Cronbach¡¯s x-.92558/ 2. After factor analysis, the 38 social health status items were analized into 7 factors such as grandparent role, parent role, spoused role, friendship role, kinship role, group member and religious role. 3. The average value of total social health status was 2.939 in the 5 likert scale, and that of friendship role was 3,272, that of spouse role was 3.214, that of grandparent role was 3.077, that of parent role was 2.868, that of group member role was 2.858, that of kinship role was 2.834, that of religious believer role was 2.056. 4. Marital status, religion, educational background, family structure, perceived health status, residence, the amount of pocket money variables showed significant difference in average in social health status. The following conclusion was derived from the above results : 1. Marital status, religion, educational background, family structure, perceived health status, residence, the amount of pocket money of elderly must be considered as health assessment criteria of Korean elderly. 2. We need to promote group member, kinship and religious believer role as well as our traditional family oriented role, and to make an alternative plan for elderly¡¯s social activity
